I don't know much about art - probably 1 milionth part of what you know - but it is always fun to learn something new. Your statue picture is perfect in my eyes. Looking at the ball - I remembered the feelings I got when I took pictures of mine - so you must be right - it is about a great contrast between light and dark! Like using the light to paint the dark!
